Carnegie Mellon University’s Open Field Entrepreneurs Fund (OFEF) has awarded $500,000 to 10 startup companies from across the U.S. to assist them in growing their business ventures.
The fund was established by CMU alumnus and Flip Video Camera creator Jonathan Kaplan (TPR’90)and his wife, Marci Glazer, to provide early-stage business financing and support to CMU alumni who have graduated in the last five years. Read More…

With the hot Oakland real estate market, many small technology companies are squeezed out with high prices or lack of space. One real estate investment partnership is hoping to change that by converting a portion of its holdings into incubator space designed for the growth of start-ups.
Revv Oakland, a collaboration between the Oakland Real Estate Co., its partners and Mark Musolino, chief scientist at start-up VitalClip, is providing space in Oakland for the region’s start-ups coming out of accelerator programs such as AlphaLab on the South Side or Project Olympus at Carnegie Mellon University. Researching successful tech startups can reveal a couple of important trends, particularly those that can serve as lessons for other startups. First and foremost, a brand should solve a problem, identifying an issue and then becoming the product or service that resolves it. Sounds simple and obvious, but I personally took a number of business classes that flailed in their attempts to drive this point home. Professors focused on fluff that had no place in the teaching of business practices, which is partly why I don’t believe in the importance of studying business in a classroom, but I’ll save that for another time.
